Faltavam algumas horas para o t\u00e9rmino do Yom Kippur (\u2217)<\/strong>, e num intervalo entre as ora\u00e7\u00f5es, o Rabino Menzies viu que Morris Schwartz, um dos membros da congrega\u00e7\u00e3o, estava se aproximando.<\/span><\/p>\n

A apar\u00eancia de Morris n\u00e3o era boa: com o rosto p\u00e1lido e os olhos vermelhos, ele parou na frente do Rabino, suando e sem f\u00f4lego:<\/span>
\n– “Por favor, Rabino, eu preciso de um gole de \u00e1gua. Estou com muita sede e desidratado. Tentei manter o jejum, mas n\u00e3o aguento mais”.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Apesar de j\u00e1 ter passado por situa\u00e7\u00f5es semelhantes, o Rabino Menzies ficou at\u00f4nito e respondeu: <\/span>
\n– “Voc\u00ea n\u00e3o percebeu o que est\u00e1 pedindo? Hoje \u00e9 o Yom Kippur, quando jejuamos e imploramos por perd\u00e3o, e voc\u00ea, um homem saud\u00e1vel, vem at\u00e9 mim e me diz que quer beber e quebrar o jejum? Seja forte e n\u00e3o desista!”<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Em l\u00e1grimas, Morris disse:<\/span>
\n– “Por favor, Rabino, apenas um pequeno gole. Eu n\u00e3o tenho como aguentar!”<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

O Rabino Menzies, um homem sens\u00edvel, se sentiu tocado pelo sofrimento de Morris. Ap\u00f3s pensar um <\/span>momento, e condo\u00eddo com a situa\u00e7\u00e3o, chamou seu assistente e disse:<\/span>
\n– “D\u00ea ao Morris uma colher de ch\u00e1 de \u00e1gua”.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Ap\u00f3s tomar a colher de \u00e1gua pareceu que a sede de Morris piorou. Chorando e num tom de voz desesperado, ele falou:<\/span>
\n– “Por favor, por favor! Eu tenho que tomar uma bebida de verdade ou vou morrer!”<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Embora n\u00e3o quisesse fazer isso, mais uma vez o Rabino chamou o assistente e pediu que desse \u00e0 Morris um copo cheio de \u00e1gua.<\/span><\/p>\n

O homem tomou tudo de uma s\u00f3 vez, limpou a boca com o len\u00e7o e disse:<\/span>
\n– “Obrigado, Rabino! Eu nunca mais vou comer arenque salgado no caf\u00e9 da manh\u00e3 do Yom Kippur!”<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

(\u2217)<\/strong> o Yom Kippur ou Dia do Perd\u00e3o \u00e9 o mais importante feriado judaico; \u00e9 celebrado no d\u00e9cimo dia de Tishrei (entre setembro e outubro), \u00e9 dedicado \u00e0 contri\u00e7\u00e3o, \u00e0s ora\u00e7\u00f5es e ao jejum, como demonstra\u00e7\u00e3o de arrependimento e expia\u00e7\u00e3o, em busca do perd\u00e3o divino e de felicidade no ano que se inicia.
